5 Ways to Unwind After a Long Healthcare Shift

How do you unwind after a long day? Even a good shift can be long, and it’s important to unwind and relax at the end of it. This will rejuvenate you, allow you to enjoy your time off until your next shift, and prepare you for anything that may happen in your life outside of work. Here are a few tips to help you unwind.

Do Something You Love

What do you love to do? When you have a little free time, how do you spend it? Maybe it’s cooking, reading, knitting, or horseback riding. Maybe it’s something different that you began doing when you were a child. Whatever it is, you enjoy it, and it’s important to you. This can be especially welcome for people who feel overwhelmed by all that they have to do and need to recharge their batteries by doing something they enjoy.

Connect

When you spend time with people you love, it can change your entire perspective. After a long shift, you might want to get together with people who make you happy. Reminisce, talk, laugh and just enjoy being together. You care about these people, and they’re separate from your work life. A nice way to relax…is to change the scenery and hang out with people other than your usual coworkers. Friends? Family? Both? They love you, and it can be very rejuvenating to embrace that love.

Go Offline

Technology enhances our lives in so many ways, but it can be draining, too. It can add to our stress, especially when it feels like a burden. We feel obligated to check email, respond to texts, see what’s been posted on social media, and on and on. Cut the tie, even temporarily: turn off electronics and put them away for at least an hour a day—more if you can!

Exercise

Go for a walk. Make time for a run. Work out at home, or take a trip to the gym. You may love to exercise, or you may hate it, but it’s important to do it. It has a unique capacity to exhilarate and relax, to provide stimulation and calm, to counter depression, and dissipate stress. At the end of a long shift, it can be just what you need.

Treat Yourself

When is the last time you treated yourself? It’s important, and it doesn’t have to be monetary. It may be an hour of reading time without interruption. It may be a banana split. Self-care comes in many forms, and it’s more than a cliché. It’s an important way to unwind, relax, and rejuvenate. Putting an emphasis on self-care helps you to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself—something many people struggle with and something that can affect personal and professional relationships, as well.
