A surgical tech is an important member of the operating room team. Surgical techs have specific duties before, during, and after surgery, and attention to detail is critical at every stage of the process. In addition, surgical techs must be adaptable, quick thinking, and organized.
Before Surgery
Surgical techs are responsible for specific functions before surgery. Although tasks may vary, the surgical tech’s responsibilities may include preparing the operating room for surgery, sterilizing items, and preparing the patient for the operation.
Precision, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills are essential in this role at all times, including this stage that focuses on preparation. For example, when the surgical tech is preparing the OR for the procedure, certain factors must be considered. The surgeon’s preferences and whether the surgeon is right-handed or left-handed determine how the room will be organized.
During Surgery
In the operating room, everyone has specific tasks, but they all work as part of a team. Surgical techs have several duties, including handing instruments and other items to the surgeon. With experience, surgical techs begin to anticipate what the surgeon will need. This is an example of adaptability: surgical techs must be attuned to the needs and preferences of each surgeon for that particular surgical procedure. In addition, surgical techs ensure that sterile techniques are administered properly to prevent surgical site infections in patients.
Even the most routine surgical procedure can be fast-paced, hectic, and very intense. In that environment, mistakes can happen. Another important duty for surgical techs is to help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments. This is to ensure that these items are accounted for and that none of them remain in the patient when the surgery is complete.
After Surgery
That particular duty continues after surgery, as well. The surgical tech is responsible for safely gathering sharp and delicate instruments and counting them to make sure everything is accounted for and nothing is left inside the patient. This is another time when the tech’s attention to detail and strong organizational skills are especially important.
The OR and instruments will be needed again, and the surgical tech is partly responsible for leaving the operating room in perfect condition for the next case. In addition to disinfecting all the equipment and tools, the surgical tech also cleans the operating room after the procedure. Doing this quickly and efficiently ensures that the space is available without delay for the next case.
