What Are Different Job Titles for Surgical Techs and Sterile Techs?

Searching for a job can be challenging. Different job titles can make the process more challenging. For example, if you are a surgical tech or sterile tech, you may find jobs under a variety of different titles. This is a handy guide to help you sort through them. Keep in mind that these titles may use the terms tech, technician, or technologist, almost interchangeably.

Surgical technologists are known by a variety of names, including surgical techs, surgery techs, surgical technicians, surgical assistants, operating room assistants, OR techs, scrub techs, or scrubs. Other titles include CST, ST, Certified Surgical Tech, Certified Surgical Technician, NCCT, or Tech in Surgery-Certified.

Although they may have different job titles, the job is the same. The role is to help prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, and assist doctors during operations. Some techs specialize, so the title may include that. For example, these titles may include OB Tech, Obstetrics Technician, Labor and Delivery Tech, CVOR, Cardio Vascular Operating Room Tech, GI Tech, or Gastro-Intestinal Tech.

It’s helpful to know these titles because it can make searching for a new job easier. If you didn’t know these titles, you might limit your search to sterile tech, without even realizing that these titles are synonymous with that term.

What about job titles?

Just as searching for a job with many different titles can be challenging, figuring out terminology for your resume can be challenging, as well. When you’re job hunting, you can search using your current title or the title of the jobs you’re interested in as keywords.

However, be careful about the title you use on your resume. If a company’s human resources department calls…for confirmation of your work history, it’s generally looking for two things: your dates of employment and your title, making it a pretty bad idea to put down a position name that wasn’t actually bestowed on you.
